Mmm. Living in coal-country West Virginia, I think of this every time the Volunteer Fire Alarm goes off.

"True gender equality is actually perceived as inequality. A group that is made up of 50% women is perceived as being mostly women. A situation that is perfectly equal between men and women is perceived as being biased in favor of women.
And if you don’t believe me, you’ve never been a married woman who kept her family name. I have had students hold that up as proof of my “sexism.”
My own brother told me that he could never marry a woman who kept her name because “everyone would know who ruled that relationship.” Perfect equality – my husband keeps his name and I keep mine – is held as a statement of superiority on my part."

Also the study where they had women and men talking in a discussion and when women spoke around 30% of the time, men perceived them as dominating the discussion. They didn’t consider it “equal” until something like 5-10% of women talking.

Voila. A beautiful example of why fighting for equality becomes a gross exaggeration in the eyes of the oppressors.

When Natalie and I were discussing getting married she asked me “What about my last name?” and I said “I’ll take it. I don’t care.”

Her father is dead. Her Italian family name isn’t all that common in Scotland. My father, who I never liked that much, has two other kids to carry on his name, not to mention my brother, who isn’t even related to the guy, so there are enough Valmassois out there. I have no problem ditching my name and taking hers, and there are millions of men like me out there so shut the fuck up with your kyriarchal oppression and baby feminist bullshit.

You guys remember Jack White? You should, he’s still releasing music weekly. That’s Johnny Gillis, who took, both personally and professionally, forever, his wife’s last name. Happens all the time, but rather than point out when it does you reblog selective snippets of internet essays that were written when you were 12 and suck each other off talking about how oppressed you are. You’re quoting something written about FANFICTION in 2006 like it’s front-page news.

Wow, it’s unfortunate that so many of you still feel that way. Perhaps I can offer you a few examples that are more positive and encouraging, including my own story. Let’s work together to make sure these kinds of examples become mainstream and readily accepted by the rest of society. Thank you for your thought-provoking post.
